KWIBUKA27 : UR Honoured Victims of genocide against Tutsi in Former NUR

Thursday 22 April 2021, for the twenty-seventh time, the UR community paid tribute to the victims of genocide against the Tutsis in the former National University of Rwanda, current campus of the University of Rwanda in Huye. It was on the night of April 22, 1994,when more than 400 students, academics and staff were killed during the genocide. Professor Alexandre Lyambabaje University VC chaired the commemoration alongside Huye District Mayor Ange Sebutege, Ibuka representative , UR students and staff.

A minute of silence was observed at the start of Kwibuka27 event , Officials and victims family members took time to lay wreaths at the mass graves. During the event, Prof. Masabo Francois delivered a presentation detailing the Genocidal regime’s chronological events and plans that preceded the Genocide against the Tutsi. Plans were thorough and consistent. In his speech, Prof. Alexandre Lyambabaje urged scholars and students to lead in fighting Genocide denial and go deeper to explain the meaning of Remember, Unite, Renew. Prof. Lyambabaje reiterated UR’s need to spearhead the cause of teaching Rwandans the country’s history.
